Scientists say Canada's glaciers are headed for unstoppable thaw

Sean Kilpatrick via Reuters

Lowell Glacier rises from waters in Kluane National Park, near Haines Junction in Canada's Yukon Territory.

OSLO, Norway — Canadian glaciers that are the world's third biggest store of ice after Antarctica and Greenland seem headed for an irreversible melt that will push up sea levels, scientists said Thursday.

About 20 percent of the ice in glaciers, on islands such as Ellesmere or Devon off northern Canada, could vanish by the end of the 21st century in a melt that would add 1.4 inch (3.5 cm) to global sea levels, they said.

Governments are trying to understand every possible centimeter of sea level rise caused by global warming, to plan how to protect cities from New York to Shanghai or low-lying coasts from Ghana to Bangladesh. "We believe that the mass loss is irreversible in the foreseeable future," assuming continued climate change, the scientists, based in the Netherlands and the United States, wrote in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Lead author Jan Lenaerts of the University of Utrecht told Reuters that the trend seemed unstoppable because a thaw of white glaciers would expose dark-colored tundra that would soak up more of the sun's heat and further accelerate the melt.

A total melt of the glaciers would take several centuries. Climate change is warming the Arctic faster than the global average.

Most past estimates of Canada's glaciers, based on less precise data of their size and melt rates, pointed to a smaller contribution to sea level rise of perhaps three-quarters of an inch (2 centimeters) this century, Lenaerts said.

The U.N. panel of climate scientists has projected that world sea levels will rise by 7 to 23 inches (18 to 59 centimeters) this century, or more if a thaw of vast ice sheets in Antarctica or Greenland accelerates.

Canada's glaciers are little-studied and often lumped into the panel's estimates with ice in Alaska, Patagonia, Russia and Svalbard off north Norway.

"These glaciers are a significant part of the whole equation and of future sea level rise," David Vaughan, head of the ice2sea program for studying global warming based at the British Antarctic Survey in England, told Reuters. "We can't afford to ignore them." Vaughan was not among the authors of Thursday's study.

"Most attention goes out to Greenland and Antarctica, which is understandable because they are the two largest ice bodies in the world," Michiel van den Broeke, a co-author of the study at Utrecht University, said in a statement. "We want to show that the Canadian ice caps should be included in the calculations."

The experts used satellite data of the extent of Canadian glaciers over the past decade to work out a model to project their decline. The projection of a 20 percent loss of volume was based on a scenario in which world temperatures would rise by 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) this century and by 8 degrees C (14.4 degrees F) in the Canadian Arctic. That's well within most U.N. scenarios.

In a nutshell we are actually just seeing the end of the last ice age with the retreat and melting of the last ice. Sea levels have historically risen and lowered for the history of the Earth. Not good news for people living at current sea level.

A grand Phenomonal at best but excelerated much by human greed.

As this earth is due for its 26,600 year axis rotation it is only natural for the air to warm and glaciers to melt. Yet human greed has excelerated such immesnely. How many new oil wells/digs do we really need when the funds couldhave gone to building more Wind Farms? How many New homes and Huge Office building can we build on more natural resources? And how many more animals amphibians and reptiles do humans need to kill in the name of Greed. The more animals are killed for human enjoyment the more we destroy this Planet Earth our home.

AND HOW MANY MORE Wars do we need to control our own when wars just destory more natural habitats and life----yet nothing ever gets resolved! Some of the current wars have been ongoing almost since the beginning of time!

How could one begin to expect an explanation of a 26,600 year axis rotation [shift, adjustment, alignment???] from a mental midget that speaks of a "grand phenomonal" and "excelerated" greed in a scientific context? silly "shrinks" might wish to consult one immediately after purchasing a dictionary.

So tell what is new here. All so predictable and unstoppable.

Accelerated population growth is associated with the coming there from pollution and environmental destruction makes this unstoppable.

Damage done is faster and greater then the clean up.

Am I worried, I don't think so. Anybody with halve a brain would have seen this coming a long, long time ago.

My time on this place is running short and it will not effect me.

Sort off you made your bed now you have to lie in it. You all have choices to make that are not very pretty and unlikely that you will make them.

I take all of this with a grain of salt. We have had ice ages and mini ice ages that had NOTHING to do with man. We have had the heating of the earth and deserts created that had nothing to do with man. I believe this happens in cycles due to the sun and volcanos and a lot of other natural factors. OUR EARTH is a lot stronger than we give it credit for.

If you own ocean front property you'd better sell now before the oceans rise 1.4"....and this will happen over a couple centuries?...how do they know that some event might not reverse change and it'll get colder?...if it took 10,000 years from last ice age to get to where we are now?....Besides I really don't care...i'll be dead, my kids and their kids will be dead, after that i won't know my family so who gives a rip....let the basta--ds melt...

Meteorologists can't tell us what will happen a month from now and somehow we have "professionals" that can tell us what will happen 100 years from now? I remember in the 70's "scientists" were telling us we were entering a new Ice Age and was going to see freezes through Florida on a continual basis.

Then it warms a little and by 2000 Al Gore is telling us that future children "aren't going to know what snow is". And here we are 13 years later - tell the northeast the kids no longer will see snow!!

And the last few years the average temperature is COOLING!! That's why it had to change from "global warming" to "climate change" because they still have to try and find a way to claim our evil capitalistic lifestyle is dooming the planet.

So when it rains it is climate change. When it DOESN'T rain it is climate change. When it is hot it is climate change. When it is cold it is climate change. When it is "just right" it is climate change. When there are 4 hurricanes in Florida it is due to climate change. When there is NOT a hurricane in a particular year it is climate change. I think you get the point......................

The earth is getting warmer, why we don't really know or we can argue about it, but to put your head in the sand is just stupid. I am sure I am older than you and in the 70s they said no such thing. I will be long gone before it falls apart but people do need to understand there will be a lot of upheaval when the oceans rise. About 44% of the worlds population live near the coast so when they lose their land, they might want yours. If it never happens so be it but if it does you had better be ready. Another VERY CONSERVATIVE estimate. Note that scientists are CONSERVATIVE. They view every choice, they measure every assumption in a very CONSERVATIVE manner. What that REALLY means is that all the dire predictions are CONSERVATIVE and probably LOWER THAN WHAT WILL ACTUALLY HAPPEN - remember every assumption along the way was conservative.

What does that mean? Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Are these the same scientists who believe in the big bang theory? The idea that millions of years ago there was an explosion and order to the universe came out of an explosion.? They teach the theory of evolution as fact? You have more faith to believe that nonsense than I have. a little physics lesson when there is an explosion that creates disorder not order. if evolution was possible a sea or water dwelling creature would have to come out of the water, be able to feed itself and be able to have sex and reproduce itself. These same scientists would like us to believe that this could happen over millions of years. i am here to tell you that is the craziest notion in the world. you take anything that lives in the water out of the water, they can not feed themselves let alone have sex and reproduce themselves. water is fundamental for their survival today, tomorrow , next week and time even a million years is not going to change that fact. Come on people think for yourselves. These scientists are paving the way for the largest tyrannical oppression mankind has ever seen. call BS what it is.

Good thing that the Arctic has been below normal temperatures all winter. Good thing that there has been no warming for 15 years. Good thing that the rate of sea level rise went down in recent years.

Alaska has been cooling since the year 2000. In 2012 Antarctica set a new record for the MOST sea ice extent.

When both poles are getting colder (and remember the warming was supposed to show up there first) it's kind of hard to see how this so called thaw will be unstoppable.

"Arctic sea ice is nearing its winter maximum and will soon begin its seasonal decline. Ice extent remains below average, in part a result of the persistence of the negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation that has kept winter temperatures warmer than average."

From the NSIDC. You can read it on their web site, if you like. And:

"Average sea ice extent for February 2013 was 14.66 million square kilometers (5.66 million square miles). This is 980,000 square kilometers (378,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average for the month, and is the seventh-lowest February extent in the satellite record. Since 2004, the February average extent has remained below 15 million square kilometers (5.79 million square miles) every year except 2008. Prior to 2004, February average extent had never been less than 15 million square kilometers. Ice extent remains slightly below average everywhere except the Bering Sea."

Trying to prevent change is Unnatural and wrong.

To try and prevent it jeopardizes evolution.

And evolution is something mankind seriously needs.

Environmentalist are pro life but anti evolution--a contradiction.

Those who argue the changes are too fast are wrong.

Were here because of fast changes--just ask the birds who survived the last 'quick' change 65 million years ago.

There have been millions of smaller changes and all brought about -- us.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT!

You read these dire scientific predictions all the time, and most of them reference the end of the 21st century as the likely time when much of this global climate change will become significant. But then these same scientists are all the time having to come back a few short years later and explain to everyone in shock and dismay that these same predicted climate changes have already taken place. Please understand that most of these predictions are woefully inadequate when it comes to accurately assessing just how fast these climate changes are likely to occur. And do you all want to know why most of these predictions are woefully short when it comes to accurately predicting just how fast these climate changes are going to occur? Because much of the scientific world still does not include the warming effect from water vapor (humidity) in the air in their future predictions, because much of the global scientific community still does not regard water vapor as a true GreenHouse Gas (GHG), even though water vapor is already probably responsible for 80% - 90% of the GHG effect here on Earth. So until this gross oversight by much of the scientific community is finally resolved, expect to continue hearing just a few short years later that many of these dire climate change predictions have already come true. - RC

Water vapor is actually the great multiplier of the overall GHG effect. It multiplies the effect from all the other GHGs many times over, and that is especially true in the arctic and antarctic regions of our world, where traditionally the level of humidity found there has been comparable to that found in arid deserts. - RC

              #8.1 - Fri Mar 8, 2013 9:06 AM EST

no, not true, not even close. water vapor may be an issue to some details and quantitative accuracy in the climate models, but it is not the critical factor on global temperature in our present climate.

the reason is simple, the absorption bands of water vapor tend to straddle the wavelengths at the peak of Earth's black body curve — the temperature controlling the night side cooling to space. CO2 and CH4 have the critical absorption bands near the peak of this curve, where H2O does not absorb, and are hence much more effective at this time.

if the ambient night side temperature rises too much (like 10K) then the upper H2O bands will kick in and really get us into hot water, as it were. eons ago when the planet was much cooler in a bit of snow ball state, the lower H2O bands would be the control point to drive the system up to the temperature we see today.

the climate we have now sits in a temperature window where the black body curve is peaked right between two extensive H2O absorption bands. it has been the lower CO2 bands that have been responsible for pushing the temperature up in recent centuries. the atmosphere finds a balance point where the radiation can get out. close the window with any particular GHG and the temperature will adjust to set the cooling curve under another window at a higher temperature.

if we keep moving the curve up in temperature, however, those next windows are a bit too hot for happy human habitation.

yes and no - with the trend to a cooling cycle, what we have managed to do is to hold off the that tend until later (increasing the greenhouse effect) About 1000 years ago, the "little ice age" gripped Europe and thy froze their a$$es off. There was no "global weather service" but the tree rings tell an interesting story of cooling for some reason

Now she cliams her tweeter account was hacked and she didn't tweet those things but refuses to apologize to the and I quote "Zionist lobby in America". That right there shows she made the comments. She can lie about her account being hacked all she wants, but why not apologize for such hateful racism. Oh wait I forgot, you can't be racist unless you are white. Sorry my mistake

hkdakota......wow, I had not heard this news. You are right. That is apalling at it's best. I don't find it surprising though....after all they have continually kicked Israel UNDER the bus. I have ALWAYS felt that Obama, his wife and his administration are not lovers of our country. Michelle......for ONCE in my life, I am finally proud of my country....remember that? The leftist media will NOT report ANYTHING that would garner NEGATIVE publicity to the Obama administration.

Don't mistake me for Jerry1795679. "Experts say..." The "expert" is always the guy from out of town. How can anybody be an expert on something that hasn't happened? How do the "experts" explain that the daily weather reports give the day's recorded temperatures and the record high temperature and record low temperature for each calendar date, and most of the time the records were set decades, or even 120 years ago? How does that indicate a trend of rising temperature???

First, let's try an explanation of the word expert. Breaking down the word expert results in two words EX and PERT. The ex part refers to something in the past or something that has been. The pert part does require the full spelling of the word thus, SPERT . Now a spert or other spelling , spurt, this is a fluid drip under pressure. Therefore we now have the meaning of the word expert; " A has been drip under pressure." Or there is also the short version. An Expert is someone from out of town, wearing a suit and tie and having an opinion on any subject.

As for me I will believe the past scientist Carl Sagan. He was a very knowledgeable person.

Duh, the Ice Age began ending about 10,000 years ago. Glaciers have been melting in North America since that time. Don't people know that? The Great Lakes exist because the Glaciers melted as the earth warmed from an Ice Age. Do the Fraudsters who want to kill you to stop global warming want the Ice Age to come back? There was concern in 1970 - see Newsweek - about Global Cooling. Why? Cause the earth does that. Taxpayers around the world have been scammed by socialist corrupt politicians and their fraudulent researchers. Hang them all!

Not much to add from the above. Can't control or change nature. And some scientists like to start with the conclusion that they want (and got their grant money for the purpose of). Give some of them a large enough grant and they would "prove" that second-hand smoke causes pregnancy!

A fetus couldn't be a human being at 16 weeks because as we all know Progressives are loving inclusive people and wouldn't base their politics on the murdering of those among us least able to defend themselves just to make a bunch of lesbian feminists happy....or would they? So Skibum, I'm a progressive and believe a fetus is a haman being at 16 weeks, and support aborton up to theat point, but my wonder is why as a Conservative, you propose the statement that the Egg is human when fertilized, like most other regressives.

Could it be that many progressives or conservatives don't think alike? And if that's true, maybe you are just wrong all together in your thinking.

Progressives don't think let alone think alike. At least your honest about your belief its ok to kill another human being for any reason you choose. Further, try a reading comprehension class as I proposed no such thing. I referred to science, not my own beliefs, but someone who has graduated high school would have understood that.

The east coast had an expensive wake-up call about global warming last year. Does not matter what your ideology is, as ocean's rise and weather gets more violent, the storms will not discriminate between liberals and conservatives. Long term, we can not justify the cost of higher and higher sea walls. If we can not address the causes of global warming, we will lose our coasts, with a huge impact across the south, from Texas thru Florida.

Don't give a damn what the world will look like centuries from now, or even 50 years from now. We won't lose our coasts at all unless the water dries up. They'll just be in Kentucky instead of Virginia and that's fine. It was never conceived that man would rule the earth forever, so we're just waiting for the alarm clock.

Robinson, et. al., sea level rise depends upon the water temperature, mostly, not the added volume from land borne ice, it is like a highway warming and closing those expansion joints.

As the warming proceeds that thermal expansion will be manifest everywhere even though it has local variations now. Perhaps we should make a seaside memorial to folks like you, so future generations know whom to blame!

Didn't anyone ever tell you not to believe everything you read? Jeez buddy there's a lot of garbage on the internet. Don't believe things and take them to heart just because you read it on a government website. The government is full of Yahoo's too. Use your own smarts to see through what you have been reading. Your article claims sea levels barely changed from the year 0 to 1900. Obviously the scientist who wrote it was an econazi with an agenda and his article proves it. I watch a lot of Discovery Channel and History Channel over the years and I see them constantly finding more and more ancient coastal cities literally inundated from all over the world. Some at great distances from the current shore lines. So you see this "rising sea level problem" has been going on for quite sometime. Relax we will all get through this "Global Warming" just like we did the "Garbage and Pitch In" campains of the 70's, the "No Nukes" of the 80's and the "Depleted Rainforests" of the 90's

Tell us how many people are on the planet and in order to reverse the melting process we need to cut the population in half. Now the scientists have a real job, figure out who goes.

Actually the glaciers have been melting at different rates since the Ice Age. Though blame for global warming can be assessed on fossil fuels the nature of the solar system is at work.

amusing how you can be both correct and incorrect in the same utterance, nice non sequitur there!

Oh my the sky is falling. Lets all kiss our butts goodbye. I've had enough with these econazi eggheads, they make me want to puke. Enough already just shut to F#&k up.

I drive a big 2008 Ford F350 diesel that puts out something like 1/20th the emissions the same model truck did 10 years prior and that model put out like a 1/10th the emissions of the same model before that. And my truck is considered one of the bad guys, the modern cars are much less polluting than mine. The cars, factory's and machinery of today have been sanitized so much that they are dozens of times cleaner than they were 50 years ago due to the laws already in place. Even though the population has grown we don't put out any where near the amount of pollutants in the atmosphere that we did just a couple generations ago. So just get off the subject and find another project to beg money for.
