Subscribe to RSSTraveling at 33,000 mph, a massive meteor hit the Earth's atmosphere creating a giant shockwave that blew out windows of glass, injuring nearly 1,000 people and creating panic. On the same day, an asteroid half the size of a football field came within 17,000 miles from Earth. NBC's Tom Costello reports.
A fireball streaking across the Northern California sky Friday night brought a flood of witness reports -- the same day that a meteor exploded over Russia and an asteroid made a near-Earth fly-by.
The fireball was seen around 7:45 p.m., by witnesses as far north as Fairfield and as far south as Gilroy, NBCBayArea.com reported. It was also reportedly seen in Sacramento and Walnut Creek. NBC station KSBW of Monterey said the object was visible along California's Central Coast, too.
NBCBayArea.com said Candice Guruwaiya gave this account on Facebook of seeing it in San Jose: "I was leaving Safeway on Branham and Snell when I saw it. ... It was a bright green when it first appeared, then it went to a bright yellow. It was awesome!"
The fireball was seen about 24 hours after a meteor exploded over Russia's Chelyabinsk region and a 150-foot-wide asteroid came within 17,200 miles of Earth.
An astronomer at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland told NBCBayArea.com that Friday night's event wasn't related to the asteroid's passing:
Gerald McKeegan, an astronomer at Chabot, said he did not see it, but based on accounts he thinks it was a "sporadic meteor," which can happen several times a day but most of the time happens over the ocean, away from human eyes. Sporadic meteors bring as much as 15,000 tons of space debris to Earth each year, according to McKeegan. He explained that meteors, which are hunks of rock and metal from space that fall to Earth, burn up as they go through Earth's atmosphere, which is what apparently caused tonight's bright flash of light.
He said it was likely smaller than another meteor that landed in the Bay Area in October, which caused a loud sonic boom as it fell, breaking apart and spreading rocks, called meteorites, in the North Bay.

What's the possibility the meteors were part of the asteroid? Or what if the asteroid WAS on a Collision coarse with earth and the gov't launched a weapon to try and push it and these two Meteors were chunks blown off from it when the weapon impacted????

It's apparent that nobody is monitoring these meteor's. As large as some are, they do threaten lives, not to mention the damage as we witnessed in Russia.

Anyway...I want to throw this idea out there...according to paleontologists, the dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago, thanks to a gi-normous meteor(ite). (Personally...I vote for a CME for the dino-doom, I know, I know there's that pesky line of debris in the geological rock records). I heard somewhere that it takes about 65 million years for our arm of the galaxy, our solar system to circle the galaxy...let's do the math...hmmm-m-m-m-m...we are entering the same area of the galaxy where the dino-doom occured. It might take 100's, 1000's of years for us to be in the "right place at the wrong time", or it could be in 10 years. ("I'm not crazy, my Mother had me tested"...Dr. Sheldon Cooper, The Big Bang Theory). Just sayin'.....

For example: A passenger plane crashes. For the next month, you'll see story after story about "emergency landings", tires blowing out, air turbulence and pilots sneezing. In other words, events which happen everyday that normally wouldn't get a second glance in the news cycle, get blown all out of proportion and reported with breathless abandon as if they are major stories.
In the year 1967-68 here in western ny- southern tier. i was about 9 or 10 years old i was standing on the porch of my family's house when i heard this sound that sounded like a roar as it passed over it sounded like something super sonic it was a meterorite . it was green in color in the front and the tail was fire. it did not take long to pass by. my older brother saw it to. the folling days a local artist painted a picture from memory. her name was Nancy Shy. She moved away when i was 15yrs old. this was in the wellsville dailey reporter. wellsville ny. just thought i would share this . I find this interesting after seeing one. never seen another.

On a serious note, How long you going to hold your breath in space, KING PUTT, until everything settles back down on Earth after a near Earth Ending Event (EEE)(The estimated time gap between Dinosaurs and Humans). And the experiments of animals born in space, indicates a very less than desirable result (Effects of Chemical scrubbing of Oxygen (similar to AIDS); Recycling of Fluids, not everything is flushed into space by the Space Toilet; Lack of Gravity identical to Earth (loss of bone density, muscle mass, etc.); Constant exposure to Radiation (regardless of shielding); Lack of Earth's Magneto Sphere Effects (similar to Birds, etc.); Longterm Genetic Changes (Humankinds adaptability working against); No one has proven what causes similar effects of Alzheimers Disease after being in Space for a while; etc..
I do believe that "Creation of an Earth-like Environment of a Non Terrestrial Entity" (A Research Paper Written by another Student attending the Interrelated Systems Management Approach Courses) is a good idea. Getting there with enough resources to change that "Non Terrestrial Entity" is the main problem as well as finding a "Non Terrestrial Entity" that is of the "Goldilocks" criteria (especially Water (H2O) in the liquid form).

Of course they are being reported more now...It is the age of the INTERNET! As recently as 17 years ago, you have to pretty much wait until the 11:00 news to see what was going on...condensed into 30 minutes of mostly local news. Or scour through pape after page of newspapers.
These asteroids and meteors are telling us we lack the skills as one race to defend this planet from unknown threats beyond our orbit. Isn't it time we fix that problem?

Igby: The explosion that blew out all the windows in Russia was not ball lightning. It was a result of the meteor pancaking under immense pressure caused by rapid descent... It exploded once it passed point of inertia , releasing all the heat and kinetic energy it had built up passing through the atmosphere.

I'm surprised no news outlets (including this one) aren't discussing Apophsis and it's possible miss in 2029 and 2036 return with a 100% chance of hitting us? They estimate it will hit 500 miles west of the LA in the Pacific Ocean creating a 3 mile deep and 3 mile wide hole in the ocean within a second. This will cause the largest tidal waves mankind has ever seen and EVERY part of the shore line throughout the pacific will be torn apart for 1/4 mile inland. This will have catastrophic consequences if we don't act now to deflect it somehow.

impact craters do not 'mellon-spoon' a hole in the ground... upon impact, all the energy released follows the same rule of fluid(and thermal) dynamics as everything else... it follows the path of least resistance... i.e. reflected up and outward. this is why ALL impact craters in the UNIVERSE are at LEAST twice as wide as they are deep. (even the yukatan penisula crater, you know, the one that played a hand in taking out about 90% of life on earth, is only about 3/4 mile deep and about 170 miles wide)

The experts say that these events aren't related because they do not want mass panic. The large asteroid that missed us likely has multiple smaller rocks traveling with it and a couple of those are the ones that actually entered the atmosphere. Comets also leave debris in their orbits and there is one scheduled to make quite a show later in 2013.

For those who think this stuff is unusual, I have seen three fireballs myself (WAY smaller than the Russian one). If you keep a careful eye on the news you will read about meteor fireballs and occasional impacts every couple of years - sometimes a couple of times in a year. This just isn't all that unusual.
The big deal is that this time there was real damage and good video.
We must BAN fireballs!
