Time after time the same thing keeps happening. Good meaning people intrude on the lives of indigenous people and it turns out bad. They don't need our pots and machetes, they need to be left alone. Peru does a better job of trying to preserve pristine jungle areas but they don't do enough. There are just too many people moving from the cities and trying to make a living in the jungle. The jungle is a very poor place to try to do any kind of farming. The soil is poor and the climate inhospitable. The other problem is harvesting wood so that rich people can have exotic hardwood floors and furniture. It isn't for a paper industry, jungle hardwoods make lousy paper! And yes, Christopher I wouldn't at all be surprised if the oil and gas industry people had a hand it is too. Nother is to nasty for king oil to do. These people know how to live in the jungle on their own and using our "modern conveniences" only makes them dependent. They know how to live off the land and with it. Leave them alone!

Right today, social scientists maintain, small scale hunting and gathering was the most successful lifestyle for mankind. They have almost twice as much leisure time, not having to work so long and hard for the basics of food and shelter. If they want an onion, they grab a stick and dig one up.

They live their entire lives with their children and loved ones, not slaving away on the job for the vast majority of their lives. No bosses and vastly more free, leisure time, and they work and play in paradise. A bad day of fishing is always better than a great day on the job. An indigenous tribe was just researched, discovering, they don't suffer from depression and stress.

In our History Books, most recent depiction of what "Civilized Man" does best, the movie "Avatar".

Maybe I read a different article than you Steve, but I read this to mean that the tribe had come OUT of their territory apparently seeking out people traveling down the river... so it's not a matter of leaving them alone, they are attempting to make contact with outside influences. Whether for clothing or pots or machetes, if they are going to meet up with outsiders they need to either be shown how to conduct themselves in 'our' world (i.e., do not murder someone because they don't have a pot for you or steal their women or children). I don't know how you go about this, but simply saying "Oh just leave them alone!" is clearly not the long-term answer.

They may or may not want to assimilate, but the only way to truly find out is to force them to assimilate, and that is not our place. Dp, you need to think about their situation. In order to give them the benefits of modern medicine, you would introduce them to foreign diseases. This would kill many of them, and reduce what little genetic diversity they have.

That's what I thought of the Ethiopians when I arrived in Asmara Ethiopia in 1956 to serve out a 30 month tour duty in the Army. I soon learned they had everything and we had half. Their love for their families and there religion was awe inspiring. I left there in 1959 with a tremendous respect for the Ethiopians and in those years they were considered one of the most backwards nation on earth. Nothing could be further from the truth, they were the absolute salt of the earth and there demenour and kindness have shaped me all my life....I am now 73 and still think of them often.

Human are just the highest form of animal. Humans have the ability to use reason and rationality to a higher level than all the rest of the animals and take the longest to develop into self sustaining adults.
