Meet Earth's newest island — it's forming in the Red Sea

It's stopped smoking for now, but it's uncertain if volcano is done or just taking a break

That's pretty cool, I wonder how often this actually happens? Any experts out there with that info?

I also wonder how many billion$ are going to be wasted in legal fees and lobbying by competing countries attempting to claim ownership while their own citizens suffer, starve, and live in poverty, especially in that region.

Seeing as how the fellow islands in the newcomer's archipelago seem to be off the coast of Yemen [according to this article], likely Yemen will make a move to claim the island.

I'm not an expert but the Hawaiian islands are and example. As a matter of fact there is a new island forming off to the east of Hawaii the big island. There is a hot spot beneath the plate below the islands. As the plate moves a new island is built rising from the sea. The new island already has a name, but I can't remember right now. Anyway it will be thousands of years before it breaks to the surface.

The twelve-mile rule applies to determining whether one is in international waters or not. Can one claim that for the island being in their water? Is it within 12 miles of the "Rugged Island" shown on the map?

Is it even worth fighting for?

Hey, Tony...I'll run all of the foodservice ops for you. I need a 30% stake and final say on the menus, though. Deal?

Make it a 20% stake and you have a deal.

Verrry cool. I'm sure there will be a lot of geological testing done there. With a new island and all that comes with it, it would be a haven for rock jocks.

Gah,i hope countries don't go to war over a small piece of land. Knowing this world today,it might actually happen.. Mostly because some countries lack a good navy. So they try to get an island to boost their naval strength.

and after one of them wins the big bloody battle, and occupies the island, there will be another eruption. That'll learn 'em.
